KUANTAN: Disturbances by monkeys, especially at the garbage bin area which marred the environment at the Mara Science Junior College (MRSM) in Terendak, Malacca prompted its students to create the Anti-Monkey Trash Bin.
Team head Amirul Isyraf Mohd Ikhram, 16, said the invention was made entirely out of metal.
“Our school, which is located on a forest fringe was often disturbed by marauding wild monkeys which ransacked garbage bins, thus causing a mess.
“It triggered an idea for a monkey-proof garbage bin,” he told Bernama when met recently.
The invention received recognition at the 2017 Universiti Malaysia Pahang Research Exhibition and Technical Education and Vocational Training (TVET) Exposition by winning the Best of the Best Award for the secondary school category on Sept 20.
Amirul Isyraf said work on the invention began in 2015 via the guidance of teachers and from the knowledge they had gleaned.
He said, other than being referred to the American Standard Testing Material (ASTM), the invention had also been patented with the Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia.
The school co-operative, he added, had also taken the product for marketing and aspired to sell it online via eBay at RM500 each. — Bernama
