KUALA LUMPUR: Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara) sponsored a total of 16,463 new students last year while in 2014, it sponsored 24,535 students. Rural and Regional Development Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said the slight decrease in sponsorship for last year compared to 2014 was due to the sudden drop in the Ringgit value. In a written reply at the Parliament today, Ismail Sabri said another factor was due to the increase of fees in various countries. He said: “Based on the situation, the government has taken several measures to sponsor students to study abroad. One of the methods was via twinning programmes.” Ismail Sabri was replying to a question by Datuk Kamarul Baharin Abbas (PKR-Telok Kemang) who had asked for the sudden decrease in new students’ sponsorship by Mara and approximate number of students that would be sponsored for 2016 and the next two years. The minister said in 2014, Mara had also offered study loans to 24,535 new students who were pursuing their studies locally and abroad and the total sponsorship stood at 116,885 students. “In 2015, the total sponsorship given by Mara to students studying in local universities or abroad stood at 106,154,” Ismail Sabri added.
